Henry Edward Debenham was born in 1878 in Barnham (Thetford Q4-1878 4B:377), son of George and Isabella DEBENHAM (née MACRO ?).

1881 census...Aged 2, he was at Meadows, Barnham with his father George DEBENHAM [47] shoemaker; his mother Isabella [40] born Icklingham; sisters Isabella J [12], Annie [10], Ada S [7] and Frances E [2]; uncle Charles DEBENHAM [45] shoemaker. All except his mother were born in Barnham.

1891 census...Aged 12, he was at Station Road, Barnham with his parents; sisters Isabella and Ada; brother Ernest E. [10] born Barnham, and uncle Charles DEBENHAM.

1901 census...Aged 22, a farm labourer, he was in Barnham with his parents; sister Ada; brother Ernest George (farm labourer) and uncle Charles (farm labourer)

He married Harriet Anne COUSINS (Thetford Q2-1905 4B:757), later of 13 Newtown, London Road, Thetford.

1911 census...Aged 32, a forester, he was at 9 Bury Road, Thetford with his wife Annie [27] born Thetford, sons Bernard [7] and Ernest [4]; daughters Isabel [4], Iris [3] and Winifred [10 months]. All the children were born in Thetford.


He enlisted in Thetford, No.7609, 8th Norfolk Regiment (5th January 1917), then moved to 18th Entrenching Battalion (22nd February 1918) before transfer to 8th London Regiment (Post Office Rifles) (10th April 1918).
1/8th (City of London) Battalion (Post Office Rifles) in February 1918 were transferred to the 174th Brigade in 58th (2/1st London) Division, taking in the disbanded 2/8th Battalion and renamed the 8th Battalion. At the end of October the 174th Brigade (including the 8th Londons) were pushing through Rongy and Maulde to cross the Scheldt River.

In 1928 concentration of many small burial places meant that Henry ( grave B:1) and 4 others of his battalion plus six others were exhumed from Rongy Protestant Churchyard and re-buried in Tournai.
